Ian is the Head of the Vice-Chancellor’s Department at the University of York and Board Secretary to the University’s Executive Board, acting as an adviser to the Vice-Chancellor and wider senior team on policy, strategy and other issues. Before joining the University Ian worked in a number of roles for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office including spending time posted in Washington DC, where he was Deputy Head of the British Embassy’s Political Section, and in Moscow where he worked on Economic issues. Ian has a degree in Chemistry from the University of Nottingham and got his first taste of education policy as General Secretary of the University of Nottingham Students’ Union.

Ian has two daughters at Scarcroft Primary School and is more recent immigrant to York and Yorkshire, having moved to the city in 2017.
